BACKGROUND COMPETITION: JULY/AUGUST

I have decided to start a new competition in favour of the world gymnast! We tried this last 2 months but wasn't successful but we've heated up the prizes and want everyone to enter. The TWG Background Competition: July-August is going to be a good competition for all budding photographic editors but also for gymnastics fans to have a little go at a fun hobby. Creating backgrounds is cool because you can do whatever you want but there is a few rules.

Rules:

  1. Entry is 10 years +
  2. It must be a gymnastics photo (artistic)
  3. One entry per name, e-mail, twitter, facebook, tumblr
  4. Entry's after closing date will not be accepted
So, they are the basic rules. Here's some of the basic questions answered

Why?
for the chance of a world gymnast fan to have the pride of having their work displayed on the site and to win the prize.

How?
you can do edits on photoshop, muzy etc. but my favoured site if BeFunky! No registration required and the effects are better than most sites.

Where Do I Upload?
you can e-mail; the.world.gymnast1@gmail.com, Facebook: Twg Gym-Blog Twitter: @theworldgymnast or post on tumblr; gymn45tic5.tumblr.com

Prizes?
1st place will get a free world gymnast signature tee (worth £19.60-£20.60), 2nd place will get a permanent role of blogging at the world gymnast and 3rd place will get a free shoutout and follow on twitter (if you don't have twitter, e-mail)

Closing Date?
28th August 2012

more questions? don't hesitate to ask.

good luck! ;)

LONDON 2012: ITALY?

the selection process' are coming to a close for the London 2012 Olympics but Italy are the nation that is currently pending it's bid. Italy placed 1st in the team final of the London Test Event. I'm not sure when the final team will be announced but who will you put in your team? Here is mine;

  1. Carlotta Ferlito
  2. Elisabetta Preziosa
  3. Vanessa Ferrari
  4. Francesca DeAgostini
  5. Erika Fasana
Reserves: Giorgia Campana, Ciara Gandolfi

I think Italy have a lot of strength and depth. Representing them on the vault is Erika Fasana. European Finalist and Test Event Finalist. Vanessa Ferrari is the leader of bars and beam is self-explanatory. Literally, every single girl can do beam but Preziosa, Ferlito and DeAgostini are the stand-outs. Preziosa and Ferlito placed 1st and 2nd in the 2011 European Final and Francesca made the final at London 2012 Test Event. Floor is also Ferrari's bag but they could all challenge. Overall, Italy could definitely challenge.

HANGZHOU 2012: VIDEOS

Currently, the Chinese Junior Nationals are taking place in Hangzhou. Youtuber piibunina has already uploaded some videos of the event  but only floor but I'm sure there is more where that came from, but this is podium training, so be warned.

Nina Lou is one of the most excitable Chinese juniors. She's been on the lips of everybody as she has competed a few competitions but the highlight being Pacific Rim in Everett, WA. This routine is very serious and well presented. She's not one for games.

Xie Wanwei is a beautiful gymnast as shown in this routine but she is a form TYRANT. Quite messy in all her twisting/straight skills. Nice routine as it's quite different but we still don't get a break from the Mr & Mrs Smith which is still flying the flag in 2012 with her and Victoria Moors.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNv4I98Xa4w&feature=channel&list=UL

Next up is the beautiful Lu Jiaqi. Amazing beauty in the choreography. This is the piece that Yuko Shintake or one Japanese girl used at the '08 Olympics. Double Tuck, 1.5 into Front Layout. China are very weak in Juniors, they don't have much difficulty.

BRITISH CHAMPS: JUNIOR AA

the british gymnastics championships started yesterday at the Liverpool Echo arena, obviously in Liverpool. It was the Junior Girls that took the stage in the all-around competition. It was very exciting throughout the whole competition and very close with strong performances from the contenders; Raer Theaker, Gabrielle Jupp, Angel Romaeo, Emily Crowe, Charlie Fellows & Claudia Fragapane. But right from the start it was Gabrielle Jupp from Sapphire School Of Gymnastics that was in the driving seat. She kicked her day off with 13.6 on vault, one of the top scores. Bars is where you start to see the cracks because  it's very hard for the young girls to work up but Jupp was there with 13.25, the highest score. Charlie Fellows from Sanbach, also said 'no' to the weak spot on bars with 12.85. But, the contenders like Theaker, Crowe, Fragapane and Caig, this was the place where they showed they are weak on. There was an amazing set of scores on beam though. Gabrielle Jupp kicking it into 1st again with 13.550. Angel Romaeo and Abbie Caig were very strong and competent with 13.25 and The Norfolk Academy's Emily Crowe with 13.2. It was a real shame for Liverpool's Abbie Caig, as she fell on her new double layout pass on floor. She finished with 12.75 but has to bare with the fact that if she would have landed that, she would've been on the podium but stands up with 51.550 and 4th place. Gabby Jupp prevailed on floor though, 13.9 was the highest score on floor and the whole day and she finishes with 54.30, impossible to beat even if Caig would've stood up. New routine from Romaeo, 13.75 for her and silver medal. Charlie Fellows comes 3rd also. But, Emily Crowe is usually up there with the floor scores but manages none the less 13.4 and 6th Place.

The Junior Event Finals are tomorrow, so take a look at the qualifiers (couldn't get vault)

BREAKING DOWN THE U.S OLYMPIC TEAM CONTENDERS!

In this post, we will look at where U.S's best gymnasts and where they could contribute and what they can improve on.

Yesterday, we saw the closing day of VISA Championships at the Chaifetz Arena, St. Louis, MO. It was a very close competition but we did come out with one winner. It was Geddert's Jordyn Wieber. It was between her and Gabby Douglas but she did prevail. But, the hot topic on many people's lips was McKayla Maroney. In the warm-ups on floor, she had a disastrous triple twist when she fell straight onto her back/head. She managed to sit up and then walk off but she may have suffered concussion, so decided to withdraw from the competition. She will now petition for trials. We knew things weren't going to go Gabby's way after she fell on her combo on beam but still went to score 14.1, but Jordyn scored 15s in every rotation with 15.900 on her vault. Running up in 3rd was Alexandra Raisman for Brestyan's. Obviously, the floor being her strongest event, she managed to place first with 31,250 combined score (Day 1/2)

JORDYN WIEBER
Amongst the gymnastics world, we would be shocked about Jordyn not making the team. 2011 World Champion, still going strong with upgrades.

Strengths:
Beam & Floor.

Weaknesses:
Bars.

Which event(s) would I put her on?
All (For all-around.)

Is she in my Olympic team?
Yes.

GABRIELLE DOUGLAS
Gabrielle can also bring a lot to the U.S Gymnastics table. After making that big move to train at Chow's, she's been fully focused.

Strengths:
Bars, Floor & Vault

Weaknesses:
Beam (but she still is great, a little inconsistent)

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Vault & Bars (maybe floor, depends who is on the squad)

Is she on my Olympic team?
Yes.

KYLA ROSS
This has been the first major year of senior competition for Kyla. She's done very well in previous meets and has a lot to give.

Strengths:
Beam & Floor

Weaknesses:
Bars & Vault

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Beam, Floor

Is she on my Olympic team?
Yes.

ALICIA SACRAMONE
A veteran to the sport of Gymnastics, Sacramone has been to many meets, has many medals and has many fans...including me!

Strengths:
Beam & Vault

Weaknesses:
Only a 2-eventer

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Vault & Beam

Is she on my Olympic Team?
Maybe, reserve.

ALEXANDRA RAISMAN
Since 2010, Raisman has been giving us lovely, strong performances throughout the board, very competent.

Strengths:
Floor

Weakness:

BARS!!!!!!!

Which event would I put her on?
All-around

Is she in my Olympic team?
Yes.

MCKAYLA MARONEY
Recently, Maroney went down but I reckon she could get up. Her vaulting is what makes her so unique and popular but her floor is well presented also.

Strengths:
Vault, Floor

Weakness:
Bars

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Vault, Floor

Is she in my Olympic team?
If her appeal is accepted, Yes.

NASTIA LIUKIN
The 2008 Olympic Champion is coming back for more Olympic success. Now cut down to 2 pieces but those were her strongest, she is becoming a big threat now.

Strengths:
Bars and Beam (but bars is where she could be most helpful to the team.)

Weaknesses:
-

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Bars & Beam

Is she on my Olympic team?
If Maroney's appeal is declined, Yes.

SABRINA VEGA
The 2011 World Champion is back. Sabrina has got better routines and is looking in shape. Can she threaten?

Strengths:
Floor

Weaknesses:
Bars & Vault

Which event(s) would I put her on?
Floor (maybe beam.)

Is she in my Olympic team?
No.

BRIDGET SLOAN

Strengths:
Bars & Floor

Weakness:
V.A.U.L.T

which event would I put her on?
Bars, Floor or Beam.

is she in my olympic team?
Her or aSac as reserve.

So who do you think could make the Olympic Team? Comment? Tweet? @theworldgymnast

CATCHING UP...

I'm so sorry everyone, I've had a lot on my plate throughout the last week with continuous work, travelling etc. so I haven't been able to blog a lot, so I thought I'd catch up with the news from this past week.

MY THOUGHTS: VISA CHAMPIONSHIPS PODIUM TRAINING

USA Gymnastics has put up some videos of Junior & Senior podium training at St. Paul at the VISA Championships. Here are some of my picks.

Bridget Sloan

The 2008 Olympic Veteran has comeback for more Gymnastics action. I doubt she will make the team but she's really got her bars releases back, her floor & beam are also consistent but bars is really where she'll push.

Alexandra Raisman looks strong.

The 2010/11 World Athlete looks very strong up on the podium on both days. Beam was good, not too many wobbles but no Double Arabian, hopefully that'll come today? Floor, the only video shown was dance through, still nice to see. Obviously, bars was never her strong point but managed to hit with no massive mistakes. Big jump on the DTY on vault.

Gabrielle Douglas is looking amazing.

I think the rest of the field need to look for Gabby. Her vault was hit to perfection, Nice bars set, cracking beam and an okay floor. I wish Gabby would get a new routine, it's such a tiresome song.

Jordyn Wieber....NEW BEAM?

I swear Jordyn has a new beam set. There looked like new skills? Hit though.

------------------------------------

Australia Olympic Squad

Injury has killed a lot of girls off the Australian girls off but we still have 12 girls in the running for the all important 5 places. Georgia Simpson has withdrawn due to her dislocated ankle at the 2012 Pacific Rim. Also, Nikki Chung tore her ACL on vault in Sydney. Zoe Lorenzin also forced out due to a stress fracture. We wish these girls the best of luck on their recovery. To the girls that have been shortlisted, 5 of them were 2008 Beijing Olympic competitors.

  1. Georgia Bonora
  2. Ashleigh Brennan
  3. Georgia-Rose Brown
  4. Angela Donald
  5. Emily Little
  6. Daria Joura
  7. Larissa Miller
  8. Lauren Mitchell
  9. Mary-Ann Monckton
  10. Chloe Sims
  11. Olivia Vivian
  12. Georgia Wheeler
In the men's side, Joshua Jefferis is Australia's sole male competitor. This surprises me as Prashanth Sellathurai has a big chance of medalling on Pommel's isn't up? But, I'm sure his talent can easily give him that one way ticket.

OUR NEW GYMNASTICS APPAREL STORE.

About an hour ago, The World Gymnast launched our first Online Gymnastics Apparel Store. This is a first for many blogs so I am very excited. It's on spreadshirt, a site that creates the t-shirts, gifts etc. and has them in your home within 1-2 days. We've already designed 3 items and they are on sale now, waiting for you to get your hands on them. We will be selling Gymnastics Tees, Trousers, Totes etc., lots of cool goodies and clothes to show off in the gym and make your friends jealous;) We are taking in requests for clubs, for their apparel etc and also any meets (i.e TOPs) so we can give the gymnasts free merchandise.

I'm planning on giving 1/2 the money on every purchase to a charity/trust but I'll figure that out closer to the time.

Enjoy the site, Gym Plex

Pipers Vale: TRI-MEET

In 20 mins, 3 teams from Europe will go head to head in the British Gymnastics Capital of Pipers Vale. Great Britain have a big team of 12 girls with Finland only representing two.#
Here is the full start list before we get into details.

Finland
Rosanna Ojala
Annika Uorvikva

Spain
Maria Paula Vargas
Toya Rojas Pascual
Ana Maria Izurieta
Elena Zaldivar Saez

Great Britain
Danusia Francis
Nicole Hibbert
Imogen Cairns
Niamh Rippin
Marissa King
Jocelyn Hunt
Laura Mitchell
Jennifer Pinches
Rebecca Tunney
Hannah Wheilan
Beth Tweddle MBE

So, who can we expect to do well?

Well, I doubt the Finnish girls will challenge for medals but we could see some surprises. In the Spanish camp, all 4 girls are very strong floor workers so we could see them come alive there. Vargas is very strong on vault aswell so she could medal. Moving to Britain, we already know that Britain will win as the team because they have 12 to 4. Beth? Slight injury prior to Europeans therefore sitting out, if she really wants this Olympics, she is going to have to try a little hard to make the team. Beam is were Britain can go far. Francis, Pinches, Whelan, all very talented beam workers (as being the beam workers in the team final at Euros.) Obviously, Tunney and Tweddle will be the ones going for gold on bars. No Ruby? Lizzie Beddoe? and for the other teams, where's Claudia Menendez? and Paula Tiita for Finland.

but what do you think? competition starts in 6 minutes. ''like'' BG SCORE on facebook for Results.
